Google and Motorola, an update

When Google bought Motorola, I wrote about the possible options that Google had. There is some news this week throwing some light on what path Google is finally taking. According to Bloomberg, Google is to sell off the Set Top Box business.
At the time when Google bought Motorola, Google's TV business still held a promise. Many even speculated that this business was one of key reasons why the acquisition was done. Times have changed since then and many will not be surprised about this Bloomberg news today.

Evolution in Indian politics

I was following the IPL-Tharoor saga not just as another scandal, but rather as a definition of what is the Darwinian fitness in Indian Politics. When Tharoor became prominent in politics, to me it was a welcome mutation – not a perfect new species, mind you – but a mutation that was a definite improvement on the existing species. And there was reason to believe that the environment of selection too has changed with increasing education of the masses and increasing influence of the electronic media. From that perspective it was quite interesting to watch if this new gene survived. It is probably too early to write the obituary of this political gene, but I think it looks unlikely that it will survive. In Indian politics it appears that the fittest one is the same old fashioned, wily gene. What nation really pays for MP's lunches

The Hindu reports that the nation paid Rs 60 Cr to subsidise MP's lunch during the last 5 years. The numbers are revealed as a response to an RTI petition. Let's look a bit deeper into the numbers. Rs 60 Cr in five years translates into Rs 12 Cr per year or Rs 1 Cr per month. If we take that the canteen functioned 20 days a month , with 500 MPs eating at the canteen on an  average per day (considering that the parliament is not in session always, I think these numbers are quite high) , the subsidy amounts to Rs (1 Cr)/(20*500) or Rs 1000 per MP, per day. The report quotes typical subsidy for some of the dishes: Non Vegetarian meal : Rs 66 Stewed Vegetables : Rs 38 Fish Fried with chips: Rs 70 Mutton cutlet : Rs 52 Mutton curry : Rs 60 Masala Dosa : Rs 24 Roti is sold at a profit of Rs 0.23 per roti and khomani ka meetha is sold at cost price.
